Statement on tools, and on graphic design as sculpture
Statement
AI assistance is just making up for lack of sovereignty in America as a queer Dominican immigrant artist.
I do not have a studio budget or a team. I have a vision and I have tools. AI is one of them.
Sovereignty is the right to decide what I make, how fast I make it, and what help I use.
Graphic design is sculpture
My finished work so far is mostly digital infrastructure: sites, publishing, domains.
I build it as matter: mass, scale, syntax. Figure and ground. Nothing in excess.
The name on this site is set in three lines, each stretched to the same width, so it reads as a slab. The letters are thrown and land. Then the slab turns, and the name reads on both faces.
Nothing
I am the Nothing Artist.
The limit case is an artist whose work and medium is only the body.
People who have nothing matter.
Not in spite of having nothing. Because.
When you have no studio, no budget, no team, no inherited structure, you become the structure. Your body becomes the 6th body. Your sentence becomes the building. Your matter is all you have, so you learn how to architect it.
The Nothing Artist isn’t about absence. It’s about proving that when everything is stripped away:
One body carrying a text across a room
Legible at the back wall
Felt before it’s understood
…still holds. Still matters. Is matter.
That’s sovereignty too. From Santiago to New York, from systemic poverty to Universe API. People who have been told they are nothing learn structural integrity first, because they have to.
They don’t get to fake it.
Body
The body is infrastructure too: routing and piping.
The next work puts the body in rooms and in nature, doing work: reading a book, writing on a stage, coding in a park.
